Danny's page
And now for something completely different.  All the photos on this page (except "mugshot") were taken by Dan, most while serving in Berlin in the early '70's.  The difference is, he took the time to write his thoughts on the back of many of them.  Here are some of Dan's comments and observations from that time ...
"Downtown, Kurfurstendamm, and the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial in the distance ... a ruin retained since the war as a reminder of the outrageous folly of misunderstanding ourselves."

"The Russian Memorial of the Great Patriotic War is very heavily sealed and guarded since a Russian guard was shot.  There is a bird on top of the Soviet Soldier Statue's helmet.  He is contemplating mischief, I can tell.  He has no use for politics or economic squabbling -- he's more concerned with such trifles as where his next worm is.  There is no contradiction to him."
"Formerly Hitler's Air Ministry, presently Amerikaner Kommandateura (HQ).  It was spared bombing that we could claim it during the splitting-of-the-loot.  I work in the basement of the building on the left ... I resent the location.  There are actually several buildings -- this is only the entrance.  Underneath is a six-lane highway -- now flooded -- Hitler built to expedite his movements around Berlin."
"Hitler's viewing stand at SS training grounds.  This is the first picture I ever took, prepared and developed myself.  I'm proud of it.  The SS officers stood here during the "War" snd directed the physical training of the military elite for Germany.  Somehow, it seems apathetic, almost as if it was waiting."
"On the edge between freedom and slavery.  You think he'd be at least sweating."
"I can afford to be flippant, I'm on this side."
DEM UNBEKANNTEN FLUCHTLING

"To the unknown refugee.
Shot while trying to reach this side of the canal.
Hell, he was just chasing a duck."
"The new persists in distracting any objective attention to the old."
"Much of Berlin's population, an inordinate proportion, are elderly widows.  I wonder if they are living in my world?"
"Nothing I've read explains this ... satisfactorily."
